The Catholic intellectual tradition does not require curiosity to shrink. For two thousand years it has asked whether the order studied by science and the meaning sought by philosophy might belong to one reality - and answered yes.

The history of science includes an extraordinary number of Catholic clergy and faithful whose faith motivated rather than hindered their inquiry. They studied nature because they believed nature was intelligible and that its intelligibility was a gift.

Georges Lemaître

A Belgian Catholic priest, physicist, and astronomer. He held simultaneous doctorates in physics and theology.

What he discovered

He proposed that the universe began from a "primeval atom" - what we now call the Big Bang. Einstein was skeptical. The evidence vindicated Lemaître.

His own view

Lemaître insisted science and faith addressed different questions. He was not using physics to prove Genesis; he was doing physics.

Gregor Mendel

Augustinian friar · founder of genetics, 1866

An Augustinian friar and abbot whose monastery garden in Brno became one of the most consequential scientific sites in history.

What he discovered

Through meticulous pea breeding experiments, Mendel identified the basic laws of inheritance - dominant and recessive traits, ratios of expression.

His work, ignored for decades, was rediscovered in 1900 and became the foundation of modern genetics and evolutionary biology.

Louis Pasteur

Devout Catholic · founder of microbiology

His faith

Pasteur was publicly and personally devout. He is often quoted: "The more I study nature, the more I stand amazed at the work of the Creator."

His legacy

Germ theory transformed medicine, surgery, and food safety. Pasteur's faith and science coexisted without contradiction.

The Church funds, staffs, and produces scientific research. This is not historical trivia; it is an active institution publishing peer-reviewed work today.

The Real History

What actually happened

The "conflict thesis" - the idea that science and religion have been perpetually at war - was popularized in the 19th century by two polemicists: John William Draper (1874) and Andrew Dickson White (1896). Historians of science have largely rejected it. The actual history is considerably more interesting.

c. 1100-1300 · The Church founds the universities - Oxford, Cambridge, Bologna, Paris, Salamanca. All Catholic institutions. 1543 · Copernicus publishes heliocentric model. A Catholic canon. Dedicated to the Pope. 1582 · Pope Gregory XIII commissions the Gregorian calendar reform still in use today. 1865 · Gregor Mendel publishes laws of inheritance from his monastery garden. 1891 · Pope Leo XIII founds the Vatican Observatory. 1927 · Fr. Galileo

The most famous case, and what actually happened

Galileo Galilei is the centerpiece of the conflict narrative. What actually happened is considerably more complicated than the popular story.

The popular story
The Church silenced Galileo for saying the Earth moves. Science versus religion.
The actual history
Galileo's condemnation in 1633 was driven more by his mockery of Pope Urban VIII - a former patron - than by heliocentrism itself.
His faith
Galileo remained Catholic his entire life. He never left the Church and saw no contradiction between his science and his faith.
His punishment
House arrest in a villa, not imprisonment. He continued writing. His Dialogues circulated widely.
Rehabilitation
Pope John Paul II formally rehabilitated Galileo in 1992, calling the affair "a sad misunderstanding that now belongs to the past."
The deeper point
The Galileo affair was a genuine failure. The Church has acknowledged it. It does not prove science and faith are inherently opposed.

The Church enters the age of artificial intelligence

In every era of major technological change, the Catholic Church has asked the same question: does this serve human dignity, or diminish it? The printing press, the industrial revolution, nuclear weapons, bioethics - and now artificial intelligence.

Pope Leo XIV signed Magnifica Humanitas on May 15, 2026, the 135th anniversary of Leo XIII's Rerum Novarum, the Church's landmark teaching on labor and industrial capitalism. It was published May 25, 2026, and is the first papal encyclical on artificial intelligence.

The encyclical is not a condemnation of AI. Leo XIV calls technology "not a force antagonistic to humanity" and affirms that it can serve genuine human flourishing. But he identifies the conditions under which AI becomes a threat: when it concentrates power in the hands of a few, displaces workers without concern for their dignity, generates misinformation at scale, or is weaponized for geopolitical domination.

AI and the future of human labor

AI must not concentrate power in few hands

Catholic social teaching insists on the universal destination of goods - that property cannot be private, and that its use must serve all, not only those who hold it.

Truth and Misinformation

AI's threat to truth, especially for the young

AI can generate false text, images, audio, and video indistinguishable from real content. This poses particular dangers for children forming their understanding of reality.

The principle

Catholicism holds that truth is not a preference. Truth is a condition of human flourishing. A world saturated in synthetic falsehood is a world hostile to the human person.

Disarm AI

Preventing technology from dominating humanity

AI development is driven partly by geopolitical competition between superpowers and commercial competition between corporations. Both logics risk treating AI as a weapon rather than a tool.

The principle

The Church's just war tradition and its consistent opposition to weapons of mass destruction extend to any technology capable of mass harm.

Leo XIV's words

"To disarm does mean rejecting technology, and preventing it from dominating humanity."

The question is who or what AI ultimately serves.

Magnifica Humanitas continues what the Church has done in every era of major technological change: asking whether this new thing serves or diminishes the human person, and what the answer means for how AI is governed, who profits, and who gets left behind.

Three questions beneath the surface

No. Copernicus was a Catholic canon who dedicated his heliocentric work to Pope Paul III. His book remained unchallenged for decades. It was placed on the Index briefly in 1616 amid the Galileo controversy but was removed in 1758. The popular story omits most of this.

Yes. Pope Pius XII's Humani Generis (1950) permitted Catholics to study evolution as a scientific hypothesis. Pope John Paul II affirmed in 1996 that evolution is "more than a hypothesis." The Church distinguishes the scientific question of how life developed from the theological question of why there is life at all and what it means.

Leo XIV calls Catholics to think of AI through the lens of human dignity and the common good. This means asking not only "can we build this?" but "whom does this serve and whom does it harm?" He invites Catholics into public conversation about AI governance, labor policy, and truth - to oppose technology, and to ensure it remains ordered to the human person.
